"Youth Leaders sharpening Youth Leaders." Jersey Share Matt Anderson

So I'm trying to get into the World Cup this time around. I know, I know, I've already divided my audience from the get-go. But hey! It's the world's biggest sporting event, so I'm trying to give it a fair shake. Watching my nephew play over the last number of years, I've managed to elevate my fan status from "complete illiterate" to "near ignoramus". There's still a lot about the sport I don't understand and a few things that still manage to get under my skin.

Allow me to purge myself, if you will.

The hardest part of the game for us Americans is the lack of scoring. I have a hard time justifying giving over 3 hours of my life to watch a 0-0 tie. The old sports adage is that a tie is like kissing your sister. But with a 0-0 deadlock, it's more like getting licked by the family poodle. Please! SOMEBODY score! Anybody!

And is it me, or do soccer players fall over more quickly and easily than a lawn chair in a hurricane? I'd hate to see these people at an airport. They'd practically have to be rolled through the concourse due to the excessive human contact. At times I've been tempted to rename the event, "The Academy Awards" with all the acting that's gone on. Mixed martial artists, professional wrestlers, and football players are carried off the field less frequently on stretchers than these people. Enough with the faking!

Last and certainly not least, I would pay two years' salary to the man or woman who could assure me that those blasted horns/noisemakers/dog-barking-inducers/ear-splitting-implements/Snooze-Alarms-that-won't-shut-off/kazoos-on-steroids/horns-from-the-pit are never ever ever EVER blown again. Yes, I know they're called vuvuzelas, but to me they are instruments of pure torture. I would recommend that these devices of pain be used by interrogators in lieu of water boarding. Believe me. It will yield greater results. The war on terror will be finished by Christmas. Please don't write me back and tell me they're used as a call to worship in South African churches. That's wonderful for our South African brethren. But if they creep (or more likely honk) their way to American church services, I'm becoming a monk and locking myself away in isolation. I never thought I'd hear something that could actually make me miss the shofar.

Now that my ranting is complete, on with the remainder of the article.

One tradition I've enjoyed watching is the exchange of jerseys at the end of a match. The players exchange with the person from the opposing team nearest to them when the final whistle is blown. It is a sign of sportsmanship and respect, telling the player that it was a privilege to watch their athletic ability on display. I have to admit that I kind of like that.

Reportedly, the tradition began May 14, 1931 in a match between England and France. Sometimes, certain players will try to make sure they are near a personal hero when the match ends so they can receive their jersey and have what they believe to be a piece of history.

In this thing called life, we don't know when the match is going to end for us. All we know is that we give it our all until it's over. So how do we know we're doing well? I'd recommend looking around to see who's trying to play near you. Who believes that by being near you that they are witnessing history and great ability on display? In short, who wants your jersey? We all have the ability to inspire others. We don't have to be famous or wealthy. We do it by playing by the rules and with excellence. And if we do that long enough, people start to notice. In fact, they start playing like us. Who wants your jersey? And whose jersey do you want? Who's inspiring you and setting the example for your life, because we all need heroes too?

Find people who you can play near and learn from. Be available to let others play near you too. Believe me. Your jersey is worth more than you think.

The Matt Chat Book is available at the Create Space E-Store by clicking here, or at Amazon.com by clicking here. Hope it provides inspiration for you.

"Youth Leaders sharpening Youth Leaders." Sexy Jesus Josh Mayo
Youth and Youth Adult Pastor 180 Remix, Author, Speaker

Sexy What!?! Don't worry; you won't get hit by lighting if the title actually caught your attention. No I do not believe that Jesus is "sexy" but I do worry that we as youth pastors and leaders have unconsciously "dressed" Him up a bit. At times I have been guilty of exchanging a beautiful Savior for an attractive "god."

In my sincere desire to reach people for Jesus, sometimes I have sounded more like a used car salesman then Christ follower. Ever feel the same way? I have meant well, but while trying to "sell" Jesus to others, I have attempted (in my mind) to make Him look a little "more appealing" for the masses. In the right balance, that's not all bad. The problem comes when I begin to hide the cost of true discipleship. When we try to create a more appealing, sexy Jesus, He may look more attractive to the onlookers, but in the process I end up just giving Him my imperfections. It should be no surprise to us then why the Jesus of today can seem so powerless to so many. They have confused our Sexy Jesus for Jesus Christ.

Take a moment to reflect. We create a Sexy Jesus when we just list all the benefits of salvation but never talk about the cost of salvation. Unconsciously, we want all the benefits of a relationship with Christ without the biblical price tags. And the result? We find ourselves secretly dissatisfied with the Christianity we are living. Authentic Christianity really is free, but it's never cheap. Could this be one of the reasons why so many of our students are falling through the "cracks spiritually?" Are we "selling" them a gospel that looks really appealing and sexy on the outside but forget to show them really what it takes for lasting life change?

In my spiritual journey I found that the epic message of the New Testament is surely Jesus is Savior, but our students will experience emptiness in their walk with Christ if they don't go any further than that. The resounding focus of true Christianity has to be Jesus is Lord. I like to describe Lordship as the place where our will and God's will intersect, where they cross. It's at this crucial moment where we decide if we will pick up our cross and follow Him or if we will go our own way.

The tragedy of the church world today is that we have been called to belief but not obedience. Lordship is daily obedience. Have you and I made Jesus a little sexy in our youth ministries by just getting our students to just believe but never really getting them to count the cost of what true Lordship looks like? I know I'm guilty. Take a moment. Let's look at our lives and make sure that we aren't exchanging a beautiful Savior for an attractive "god."

"Youth Leaders sharpening Youth Leaders." ONCOURSE Unboxed: Same Sex Crush

The teenage years are difficult at best. This is a time when your sexual identity is still being shaped. Experimentation and sexual curiosity are commonplace. Society's views have changed drastically over the last 20 years. This is noticeable in many areas of our culture, but is very evident in TV shows or movies, many of which have at least one gay character. This would seem to imply that it just a regular part of life, another option for a person to explore.

  • What are your thoughts on this? Does the media's portrayal of homosexuals influence your view? Why or Why Not?
  • If it is and being so openly accepted as an option for someone to explore their sexual identity in today's society, what should our reaction be as Christians?
  • Why would it be important for someone who is struggling with sexual identity, even as a Christian, continue to attend church and be open to talk about their struggles with a Christian counselor.

"Youth Leaders sharpening Youth Leaders." Producing Lasting Fruit Disciples

From: Alton Garrison, Executive Director of Church Ministries and Discipleship
(originally released February 2009)

Of all the relational discipleship dynamics, the life-to-life dynamic remains the least understood, experienced, and practiced.

Although mentoring has become a hot topic recently, there is much room for training and implementation of one-on-one training.

When Jesus said, "Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:20), He knew that application and accountability required plenty of individual connections. For instance, Jesus gave personal attention to people at all levels of the discipleship process—from the Samaritan woman at the well, to Peter, whom He pulled aside after the Resurrection.

Paul mentored Timothy, and Timothy in turn mentored others. Mentoring is a great way to rejuvenate your passion for Christ and your sense of mission while encouraging someone else to grow in the same direction. Mentoring is an excellent way to produce "lasting-fruit".

However, there is a saying that places a lot of responsibility on the mentor, "You teach what you know; your reproduce what you are."

Before we experience the joy of mentoring others, we must first consider the importance of individual growth. If you aren't growing, then those following your example will not grow.

Spiritual growth is intentional-not accidental. You will never grow spiritually without a plan. You really can't create a plan until you access where you are.

This may not be an exhaustive assessment tool, but here are some good questions to ask yourself that may help determine your level of spiritual maturity:

  • Do I lose my temper frequently?
  • Do I repeatedly make the same mistakes?
  • Do I make decisions against the counsel of my spiritual authorities?
  • Do I have unresolved conflicts with other people?
  • Am I less than faithful in my stewardship?
  • Do I often miss my prayer and Bible study time due to busyness or fatigue?
  • Do I attend church at my convenience, often missing services?
  • Do I make promises to God that I am unable to keep?
  • Are there times when others would characterize me as out of control?
  • Do I harbor grudges against those who have wronged me
If you are not where you were, or where you want to be spiritually, consider a personal growth plan.

Personal growth requires a plan. Proverbs teaches us that planning is our responsibility. The response is up to God. We can't determine what happens as a result of the plans we make, but we know what will happen if we don't make a plan-nothing.

There are many approaches to a personal growth plan. Let me give you a simple suggestion:

  • Have a daily quiet time. Start with 15 minutes.
  • Relax (1minute) Be still and be quiet. Prepare your heart.
  • Read (4 minutes) Resolve to learn something every day no matter how much or little you read.
  • Reflect (4 minutes) Meditate on what you have read. Meditation is essentially thought digestion. Pick out one passage or verse you feel God is trying to teach you and do these five things:
    1. picture it-imagine yourself in the historical context;
    2. pronounce it-say the verse aloud, each time emphasizing a different word;
    3. paraphrase it-rewrite the verse in your own words;
    4. personalize it-replace the pronouns or people in the verse with your own name;
    5. pray it-turn the verse into a prayer and pray it back to God.
  • Record (2 minutes) Write a personal application statement that is practical, possible, and measurable. What is the principle? Record your thoughts, reflections, and responses in a journal.
  • Request (4 minutes) Conclude your quiet time by talking to God about what He has shown you and making requests from your prayer list.
  • Read at least 12 books a year to promote biblical knowledge and spiritual development.
  • Faithfully attend church.
  • Discover your God-given SHAPE to become an effective spiritual mentor (discipler).
    • Spiritual gift-what gifts has the Holy Spirit deposited in you?
    • Heart-what do you love to do? What is your passion?
    • Ability-what can you do?
    • Personality-how are you "wired"?
    • Experience-what are your painful, educational, or spiritual experiences that qualify you to mentor others?
  • Become a faithful steward - tithing and supporting missions.
  • Engage in relationships with a redemptive purpose in mind. Don't just count converts, but conversations.
Once you are on the right spiritual path, you can begin to help someone else on their spiritual journey.

Bill Hull, in a classic book, The Disciple Making Pastor, divides the discipleship making process into three categories:

  • Come and see - where people become interested in Christ.
  • Come and follow Me - where training begins.
  • Come and be with Me - where the disciples are released to begin their ministry.

Here is a simple model for your personal discipleship making process:

  • Model - you watch me while I do it.
  • Mentor - I do it and you are with me.
  • Monitor - you do it while I watch.
  • Minister - you do it.
  • Multiply - you do it and another watches.
You can do this. Start now.

"Youth Leaders sharpening Youth Leaders." STOKED by Daniel Day

Graduation season brings change for youth ministry. Leaders pour their lives into students who in the next few weeks and months move into a new stage of life and following Jesus. Some of your graduates will leave for college. Are they ready? Youth Leaders need to prepare students for this transition.

You may have memories, like me, of those first moments when you went to college that shocked, frightened, or confused you. I remember feeling that way when I first set foot in my dorm (on a "Christian" campus). As a freshman, I was a little naîve. I believed that everyone I would meet in my new home would be wonderful people who loved God and wanted to serve him. If you were like me, you didn't remain nave for very long. Granted, the people who were acting out and not living their lives for God were the small minority of people. However, they were a very loud and influential minority who, if allowed, had the power to destroy college success.

It became apparent very quickly that choosing the right friends would either make or break my success in college. I literally watched a close friend drop out of school early on because of his poor choice of friends. This experience made it clear that I had to figure out a strategy for wisely picking my friends. By doing this, I was able to not only finish well, but finish with my passion for God intact.

Choosing wise friendships is only one of the 7 strategies discussed in the new book STOKED. To find out more about how this book can help give your students the needed tools for college success, visit www.thestokedbook.com.

"Youth Leaders sharpening Youth Leaders." Prayer Zone Partners

Kent Hulbert, the National Campus Missionary Coordinator, forwarded a report from one of the campus missionaries. This campus missionary shared a fairly long "summary" about what was taking place in her life and on her campus. However, it was not the length of her report that caught my eye but her name.

I immediately recognized the name as being the name of a person who had shared a prayer need on the Prayer Zone Partners web site seven weeks earlier. This campus missionary asked us to pray that she along with the other Christians on her campus would stand strong for Christ. She asked that God would tear down anything that was trying to stop His purposes from being fulfilled on campus. She asked that hearts would be open to the salvation message.

Not only had I been praying for her, but prayer teams around the nation have been praying as well. She shared in her report that a young man from her school had come to their youth service because of her influence on campus. God is answering her prayer request.

Prayer Zone Partners is more than just a "sign-up process". It is mobilizing an army of prayer warriors to pray for the army of campus missionaries that God is raising up around this nation. Before God does something, He always gets His people to praying. Reaching the campus is going to be a team effort of campus missionaries and prayer warriors.

As you challenge students to be campus missionaries, also challenge adults to become a prayer warrior for the campus through Prayer Zone Partners. (Submitted by Cecil Culbreth, Prayer Zone Partners Coordinator.)

For more information on Prayer Zone partners and how to get involved visit: youthalive.ag.org/pzp
